Literacy Research

Ten ideas to transform instruction in reading and heighten literacy for all students are offered in this booklet. The principles and ideas presented are interrelated and build one upon the other.

First Principles is intended for national policymakers and global education project developers as an implementers as a guide to incorporate reading and literacy into new projects and developing effective early grade reading programs. However, there are good tools in this guide, such as an Active Learning Checklist (for observing teachers), as well as strategies and tools to record evidence of first principles at work in local communities, schools, and classrooms. There are also excellent reference resources related to evidence-based early grade reading milestones, the stages of early grade reading, and basic principles regarding and strategies for improving early grade reading outcomes.
